Announcing the atmosphere update


It's not quite here yet but the next update will make a very important step towards what I ultimately want Baby 3D to be able to achieve in terms of creating an enthralling retro-inspired atmosphere for your game project.

While it's certainly great to have realtime lights in Babylon.js, they can be relatively taxing on perfomance and cannot be used in abundance anyway. Also those lights don't necessarily lend themselves best for creating a convincing retro look. Which is indeed what I'm most concerned with.

Take a look at the following before and after screenshots:



In the first screenshot it's just a flat hemispheric light and nothing else. While the look could obviously be improved with point lights for example, you wouldn't be able to do this for every room and scene in a whole level due to limitations. 

In the second shot you can see what a bit of diffuse colors and escpecially vertex colors do to that little scene. For that purpose I made a handy new plugin for Baby 3D that acts as a vertex "light". Not only can this be spammed throughout a level, it also looks gloriously retro and adds a lot more perceived detail.
